Summary

Alcoholics Anonymous (also known as the Big Book in recovery circles) sets forth cornerstone concepts of recovery from alcoholism and tells the stories of men and women who have overcome the disease。

The fourth edition includes twenty-four new stories that provide contemporary sharing for newcomers seeking recovery from alcoholism in A。A。 during the early years of the 21st century。 Sixteen stories are retained from the third edition, including the "Pioneers of A。A。" section, which helps the reader remain linked to A。A。's historic roots, and shows how early members applied this simple but profound program that helps alcoholics get sober today。 Approximately 21 million copies of the first three editions of "Alcoholics Anonymous" have been distributed。 It is expected that the new fourth edition will play its part in passing on A。A。's basic message of recovery。 This fourth edition has been approved by the General Service Conference of Alcoholics Anonymous, in the hope that many more may be led toward recovery by reading its explanation of the A。A。 program and its varied examples of personal experiences which demonstrate that the A。A。 program works。

our problems, so we think, are of our own making。 whatever our protestations, aren't we concerned primarily with ourselves? the minister who dreams of utopia, the safe cracker who thinks society has wronged him, the alcoholic who has lost all and is locked up。 selfishness that is the root of all our troubles。 driven by one hundred forms of fear, self delusion self seeking and self pity we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate our problems, so we think, are of our own making。 whatever our protestations, aren't we concerned primarily with ourselves? the minister who dreams of utopia, the safe cracker who thinks society has wronged him, the alcoholic who has lost all and is locked up。 selfishness that is the root of all our troubles。 driven by one hundred forms of fear, self delusion self seeking and self pity we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate 。。。more

I don't think I could have gained a better insight into the unrelenting dangers of demon that is alcoholism without reading this book。 As a someone without the infliction, I learned why someone will always be an alcoholic, even if they can easily avoid drinking for the rest of their life, as well as how a single drop of the stuff might take them entirely of the sustaining morality of their mortal coil。 I don't think I could have gained a better insight into the unrelenting dangers of demon that is alcoholism without reading this book。 As a someone without the infliction, I learned why someone will always be an alcoholic, even if they can easily avoid drinking for the rest of their life, as well as how a single drop of the stuff might take them entirely of the sustaining morality of their mortal coil。 。。。more

Read in an attempt to understand and support those around me who are struggling。This book has a lot of things that I don't believe are helpful, and a few things that I believe are。It's extremely dated in both concepts and phrasing。 I would rate it one star, but I am not the target market, so I will not star it in the rating system。I believe it's time for a better resource to come our way, or at least for someone to translate these ideas into a format that is easier for folks struggling here and Read in an attempt to understand and support those around me who are struggling。This book has a lot of things that I don't believe are helpful, and a few things that I believe are。It's extremely dated in both concepts and phrasing。 I would rate it one star, but I am not the target market, so I will not star it in the rating system。I believe it's time for a better resource to come our way, or at least for someone to translate these ideas into a format that is easier for folks struggling here and now to relate to。 。。。more

The original edition of the Big book - eye opening when one examines what is said and is not said about God and specifically Jesus Christ when it is reviewed。 God blesses those who come to him faithfully to overcome sin but forgiveness and eternal life come through faith in Christ alone。 You get sober through "faith" in a nebulous non specific higher power but one is only made clean through faith in Jesus Christ。 The subtle moral compromises and pragmatism in this first edition plays out later i The original edition of the Big book - eye opening when one examines what is said and is not said about God and specifically Jesus Christ when it is reviewed。 God blesses those who come to him faithfully to overcome sin but forgiveness and eternal life come through faith in Christ alone。 You get sober through "faith" in a nebulous non specific higher power but one is only made clean through faith in Jesus Christ。 The subtle moral compromises and pragmatism in this first edition plays out later in AA's development as a cult based on surface level spirituality and behavior modification through mandatory meetings and acceptance of relapse and relativism。 。。。more

It was okay。 It was very slow。 I am DNFing this book because I feel like it is wasting my time。 Yes It is good knowledge but, to be honest, it has put me in a reading slump。 I hate books that do that to me。 I would rather spend my time reading other books I actually know I will like and enjoy。 DNF at chapter 8

THIRD EDITION RECEIVED AT MY FIRST MEETING。 I got this book at my first AA meeting on October 3, 1996。 I assume I read it all but honestly can’t recall。 It is likely the ONLY book I own to have highlighting in it。 *gasp!* 575 pages of guideposts and hope。 The 12-step programs all over the world are miraculous; the humans of the Coronavirus Pandemic era (2020-2022) could learn a lot from this program。 Its simplicity and fellowship。 “We are people who normally would not mix” (pg 17 of 4th Edition) THIRD EDITION RECEIVED AT MY FIRST MEETING。 I got this book at my first AA meeting on October 3, 1996。 I assume I read it all but honestly can’t recall。 It is likely the ONLY book I own to have highlighting in it。 *gasp!* 575 pages of guideposts and hope。 The 12-step programs all over the world are miraculous; the humans of the Coronavirus Pandemic era (2020-2022) could learn a lot from this program。 Its simplicity and fellowship。 “We are people who normally would not mix” (pg 17 of 4th Edition)。 Now, 25+ years later, it’s time to upgrade to the 4th Edition, and get digital and audio versions。 It’s a familiar and welcome comfort。 。。。more

I wish I had read this book a long time ago。 It may have helped me understand my son, and perhaps I could have done something to prevent his taking of his own life a few months ago。 The success stories in this book are heartwarming。 Unfortunately, my son wasn’t one of those who found this path…

If this claims to be the state of the art treatment for alcohol use I do not have much hope in its success。

Saving my life。 Don't let the title fool youThis book is the foundation of most self help books and programmes you have come across。 Yes, all those self help gurus!!I have been on a personal developmental journey for over 40 years, looking for self-improvement。 Now I realise it is spiritual hunger。 I wanted more from life, within these pages I found the roots of my discontent without needing to be a religious person。 This is a spiritual textbook that is changing the world, one person, at a time。 Saving my life。 Don't let the title fool youThis book is the foundation of most self help books and programmes you have come across。 Yes, all those self help gurus!!I have been on a personal developmental journey for over 40 years, looking for self-improvement。 Now I realise it is spiritual hunger。 I wanted more from life, within these pages I found the roots of my discontent without needing to be a religious person。 This is a spiritual textbook that is changing the world, one person, at a time。 Imagine there are people out there who want to help you have a better life, by helping you get in touch with your Higher Power that can lead to a total transformation of your life, for free。 。。。more

Best Book on the Subject of Alcoholism。 Not a novel or for casual reading。 This is not a cure for the disease but a guiding light for those who want to find a way out of the prison of Alcoholism。

I read the Big Book from end to end。 Took me almost 2 years to read, but really has a lot of good tools to help those who want to quit drinking stay sober。 Many of the stories talk about how people started drinking, how they stopped and what they did after sobriety。 It’s not for everyone but for those looking to get sober it’s really a great guide to get there。

James Millikan SJ

My vote for the greatest self-help book of all time。
